In short, a Design + Build firm does exactly what the name category suggests: design your project, and execute – ‘build’– it. A strictly Interior Design firm often does not include the ‘build’ portion among their list of services, but will typically collaborate with your builder or contractor of choice, or suggest one they’ve worked with before. For residential projects, architects are more often sought out to take the lead when a client is looking to build a new and unique home, or are embarking on an extension or addition that will pose spatial dilemmas and/or significantly impact the existing facade and architectural style of the home. Architects do not typically manage the implementation of their designs, requiring clients to collaborate with a builder who will take over the execution. Builders and contracting firms do not typically provide any kind of design services, and often won’t even engage with a client unless the client has gone through the design process with an architect or a design firm.
